Where Does the Crown Rest?

In all transparency, we humans tend to struggle with authority at some level. At times, this struggle leads to frustration and can eventually cause a spirit of rebellion in our hearts.

Scripture positions us on shaky ground if we choose not to respect authority. We can pull every morsel of excuses out of the box of reasons to not respect our bosses or others in a position of leadership over us, but we still have to deal with the Scriptural position.

Romans 13:1-2 and 1 Peter 2:13-14 divulge three important teachings as it relates to those in authority over us. These verses distinctly declare:

  1. All authority is set up by God
  2. It is His will that we submit to them
  3. Resisting and rebelling against this authority will incur the wrath of God

A pertinent African proverb is, “If the head is around, don’t put the crown on your knee.” The authorities God has placed over us are the “heads” where the “crown” belongs. Unfortunately, we are the “knees” and the crown does not belong there. We must be exceedingly careful to guard against disrespect and rebellion against those God has set over us.

Plenty of people flaunt a “no one can tell me what to do” attitude toward legitimate authorities. They seek to place the crown on the knee, themselves. They plainly forget who has set up these structures.

Be assured, the attitude and actions resulting from a rebellious spirit do not cut it with God. There will be consequences!

So, instead, choose to pursue God’s directives:

  • Be humble.
  • Be respectful.
  • Treat those in authority like you would want to be treated if you were in that position.
  • Simply stated…OBEY GOD

Always remember to put the crown on the head, and not on the knee.
